Here is the legendary "shoot" between Lex Luger and Bruiser Brody from Florida Championship Wrestling. A lot has been said over the years about this match, which has become almost mythical, but as with all things, you have to make your own mind up.
The story I heard originally was that Luger was leaving Florida to go and work for the NWA/Jim Crocket Promotions and that the Florida promoters felt they had spent money on building Luger up and that he owed them. The cage match was a set up where Brody would teach Luger a lesson. However I am not sure that this is really the case.
The things that are obvious are that Brody is not "selling" much in the first few minutes, with the exception of a few times when his head is rammed into the cage. At about the three minute mark, he is on his knees in a corner and a camera man takes a picture of him and it looks like someone says something to him and at that point he sells even less. He suplexes Luger and seems to follow through for maximum impact and his kicks to Lugers body and head start to look pretty real.
At about the six minute mark he starts wiping his eyes/nose/face in the corner, as if he has been poked in the eye or maybe he thinks his nose is bleeding. Either way, at that point he executes what looks like a legitimate single leg trip and kneels on Lugers head. The ref stops this, Brody goes for another leg trip but misses. Luger is starting to look nervous.
The match ending is not what I expected. Luger pushes over the referee (Bill Alfonso from ECW) to get disqualified, then climbs out of the cage and walks away, so the stories of him running backstage don't seem to be real.
Bruiser Brody had a reputation for working stiff and for being a genuine hard man, so maybe he was just working his usual match with a little less selling than usual? I would be interested to hear what other peopl think after watching this?
