Kent Walton's captivating commentaries are almost as mesmerising as some of the wrestling we are now lucky enough to see on TWC.
We have acknowledged widely that his believable input and measured criticism of wrestlers and some bouts served to make the whole show that was pro wrestling believable.
On the Catchphrases thread a couple of years ago we gathered together a few of his regular sayings and some that sprang to mind included:
"I have no idea who he is or where he's from, but this masked man wouldn't talk to me in the dressing rooms before the bout". He would then go on to specify that The Exorcist weighed 14st 3½lbs.
"Ai-ai, ai-ai AI!"
"Hello Grapple Fans"
"I don't know what Ginsberg is beefing about".
"Have a good week till next week."
"McManus is a very skilful wrestler and has no need to bend the rules." This very phrase repeated in every bout convinced me and others that it was true. I am almost ashamed to admit that now.
I am sure you can think and add many more, since we are now hearing Kent's voice so often.
But here I want to move it along from repeated phrases to some marvellous one-offs, which are in danger of getting lost if not recorded. This first came to mind during a Johnny Yearsley bout a few months ago. Now I don't blame Kent at all for this, it's just a sign of the designer times emerging. He said: "Yearsley has his leotard on inside out because the label is on the outside." That was a gem.
Then this weekend he tried to attribute skill to Big Daddy: "Tremendous timing required for those body checks". Nice try.
In describing the 8 man heavyweight tag tourney, he humourously described the 8 in the ring together as "All that meat and no potatoes".
