Re: Waltonisms 1 Year, 1 Month ago
On the subject of just how much Kent Walton was involved, there was an interesting incident today when Syd Cooper went through the ropes just before defeating Fireman Bennett.

The crowd were admittedly in close and Syd, as ever, mad a meal of things. There was quite a melée.

Soon after, Kent commented, words to the effect: "Some fellow, a young boy, has been hurt." After a moment's reflection, as if to forestall the letters of complaint he may have envisaged, he added: "There's a simple solution to that, don't sit so close to the ring."

Nowadays such defensiveness would be more likely intended to avoid litigation!

Of course, the promoters put the seats that close with a purpose, to create atmosphere. Kent was also, strangely, rather defending a villain he had repeatedly described as unpopular.

Several times in this thread people have questioned just how much Kent knew.

A further question, which shouldn't really exist but the evidence here forces it out: were his allegiances more with the tv producers or the wrestling promoters?

He may well have been paid by ITV, but it would have been in Joint Promotions best interestes to keep him very very sweet - and I bet they did. Look at this bit of pay-back.

After a John Elijah posting of Big Daddy Kent says something like: "I'm always tempted at this time of the year to say it's posting early for Christmas!"
Kent also rather bizarrely tried to build up Catweazle as "very popular with the ladies" during his match with Sid Cooper. When Cat was thrown out of the ring Kent referred to a lady in the front row who he thought fancied Catweazle. "The referee would give him a 10 count but I bet she would give him 15!" said Kent rather strangely!!
Kent also said before the Clive Myers/Brian Maxine bout "The crown will come off but will be replaced by a skull cap". I really wanted him to make a 'Crown Topper' joke but he didn't! Kent then said that the reason Maxine had to wear the skull cap was to protect his right ear! Well of course!!

I agree Patriot, very odd comments. i guess that's why we are grouping them all together like this, to try to work out where KW was really coming from.

Every time we see a patterns, he seems to dumbfound us.

This one had me really lol when I watched Tornado Torontos v Mick McManus yesterday. McManus's bootlace was undone.

"That could really do some damage to Torontos's eye if McManus tries a dropkick."

Has anyone ever seen McManus deliver a dropkick?

That is the ultimate comment in playing it straight as everyone would now be expecting Mick McManus to deliver a dropkick.

Time of year or otherwise never stopped Lee Bamber from making this joke - repeatedly - on the various late 80s/early 90s videotapes on which he did commentary.

Yes, and whilst Kent got away with it, it sounded really corny from Lee Bamber!
