Who was Hillbilly? (Mr Mantell please) 5 Years, 6 Months ago
Was just looking at an old poster with Aaron Spencer, it advertises a Catchweight Clash between Les Kellett and the 24 stone Hillbilly. Who was Hillbilly? was it an early Haystacks (my guess) or Scrubber in another guise (Aarons guess) or are we both wrong?

Also on the card ,at the Civic Hall Solihull , were:
Steve Veidor vs The Masked Exorcist
Mike 'Flash' Jordan vs Jakie Robinson
Pet Barrett vs Johhny Kincaid.

Keep the Faith, Dusty.

When was it from?

If 1975 or later, it will most likely be Scrubber. Haystacks made it onto TV in July '75 so it would be counterproductive to use another alias in the UK after that. And 24 stone sounds more like Daly (Stax was already into the 30s by the mid '70s.)

If earlier in the 70s or even the late '60s, it could possibly be the young Mr Ruane under an early alias. The original US Haystacks Callouhn was a hillbilly character and the "Giant Haystacks" character started life as a Brian Dixon W(W)WF tribute version (hence why he wrestled in farmworker overalls) so in that case it could be him.

There is no date on the poster other than March 8th and also a flyer for the next Solihull show on April 4th , so it would appear that it was a monthly venue. Other clues: The Masked Exorcist is managed by Miss Jamie Barrington , Jakie Robinson is billed as 'The Manchester Express'
and in those un-pc times Pat Barret is a 'World Rated Irishman' against the 'Explosive Carribian Star ', Kincaid.

As a side note , how times have changed , we think nothing nowadays of a man travelling half way round the world for a show----but this poster makes a big thing about Steve Veidor coming all the way from LONDON .

Its now driving me mad--who was Hillbilly?

Keep the Faith, Dusty.

Pat Barrett went off to America in the mid '70s (he was a WWWF World Tag Team champion, replacing Victor Riviera as Domenic De Nucci's partner mid-reign) but then this US experience could well be what the "world-rated" bit is referring to.

By the sounds of it, this is an indie show. Someone else mentioned the Exorcist on here some while back - I don't think he made it onto TV. In which case, if Steve Veidor is on the bill, it would be after he'd left Joint Promotions so the late 70s, so Scrubber seems the better bet.

I am sure Giant Haystacks never went under the monica of Hillbilly.

David you are saying the same as me in reffering to him as Scrubber Daily.

Haystakcs was never 24stone but Scrubber would of been more aound that weight.

Its baffled me, and i have seen the poster and cant put an actualy date on it, although i would say Mid 1970's which in that case no chance was it Haystacks, not only that i am a huge fan of the Giant and i have never come across him using this name.

Remember Scrubber in those overalls, he looked a Hilbilly, and i wouldnt be surprised if that was a earlier name for him.

Most shows saw allot of wrestlers that werent ever shown on TV, so maybe Hilbilly wass one fo them who never mad eit on TV.

I am guessing Scrubber Daily, and i will be very very surprised if it was Haystacks as i am 100% sure it wasnt.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Does it say who the promoters are on the poster ? If it was a Joint Promotion bill it had to be early 70's to mid 70's. Pat Barrett didn't reappear in British rings until the mid 80's when he wrestled for All Star.
Could the Hillbilly be the guy who wrestled as Klondyke Jake ?
