Re: William Regal interview - on SilverVision.co.uk 5 Years, 6 Months ago
I watched the match on tv at the time, and I also have it on tape (on the Mayhem and Mystery compilation, second hand copies are pretty easy to get hold of), and it truly was the most embarrassing thing ever. Forget Big Daddy, the real reason Greg Dyke cancelled wrestling on tv was because of this match!!
The Kendo hypnotism match was shown on October 15th 1988 and wrestling actually finished on ITV less than two months later so I would have thought that the decision to cancel the ITV contract was taken long before this match was ever screened.
The cancellation was announced several months earlier, in about April/May. It was a major news item on TV, newspapers and even the Aptermags (Oct '88 PWI)
To be honest I thought Dixon allowed that to go on TV out of spite to ITV for the cancellation.
When Kendo was working as a face vs Rex Strong in August 78 he did a subtler version of the hypnosis angle (got strong to stand and get hit with a flying tackle).
Also when Kendo hypnotised Brookside again in Croydon in Sept 92 they made quite a good tag team (with Robbie draping his hair over his face zombie-_style_)
