My top ten live matches of 2002 6 Years ago
|
|
|
(Being a northerner I've not seen any Hammerlock or FWA).
In chronological order:
'Steve Austin' vs Detroit Destroyer, Stockport, 27 January
I don't care if I am a cancer on the business for attending a tribute show - this was a well-worked engrossing match, regardless of what costumes and names the participants used.
Elimination: Dr Dream, Paul 'Flash Andrews' & Damon Leigh vs Sean Phoenix, Richard Noble & Heresy, NPWA, Wigan, 28 March
Good blend of modern moves and classic psychology using the elimination format to full potential.
Johnny Storm vs Trent Acid, GWF, Preston, 6 July
Badly executed spotfests are bad. Well executed spotfests aren't.
Strap: Steve Starr vs Damon Leigh, NPWA, Wigan, July
A working man's club show from a training school _base_d promotion is the last place you'd expect to see a vintage 70s Southern US _style_ strap match, but we live to be suprised.
James Mason vs Blondie Barrett, TWA, Liverpool, 10 August
In terms of heat per fan, this pissed on Hogan-Rock. Openers are meant to warm up the crowd - this one was a scorcher.
Steve Starr vs Farenheit vs Gothic vs Kreep, NPWA, Wigan, 20 September
This should have been indy at it's worst, with highspots left, right and centre from the outset and every shortcut in the book with arena brawling, but it went on and on until it became irresistible.
Crux vs Richard Noble, NPWA, Wigan, 20 September Total change of pace to a credible scientific _style_ clash firmly establishing Crux in a top contender slot.
Saraya vs Angel, All Star, Hanley, 21 September
Pre-teen girls are hardly the target audience for most promoters, but the pair sitting next to me lived and died with every moment of Angel's comebacks.
Ladder: Robbie Brookside vs Doug Williams, All Star, Liverpool, 29 September
Between the all too predictible 15 minute draw at FWA last December, and the last minute change of stips here, I'm still waiting for the full-on 15 round best of three falls straight match with these too. In the meantime, this certainly kept the appetite whetted.
Chad Malenko vs Rick Rage, All Star, Hanley, 23 November
I honestly think that, had he been there, our friend Jack Halewood would have described this as 'not entirely unwatchable'. There can be no higher praise.[/b]

Well, as I'm not driving yet, I can't get much variation - I can only attend TWA at Bournemouth. But my favorite live match of the year was...
Jodie Fleisch Vs The Shooting Star An amazing high flying match, which also had the best crowd reaction of the match - and it was a opener! If your interested, you can read my whole match report in the results section of this site.

Great report, nice mix of _style_s represented, thanks for posting! Quite possibly the most positive and constructive post we've had here in a while.

Seen lots of good wrestling this year from the two RBW shows I've seen and the All Star show as well as a tape of two Hammerlock shows that a friendly young Irishmen showed me on the train.
I'd say the Alan Kilby/Mike Weaver match at the second RBW show was eye opening and you can learn so much from matches like that.
Fergal Devitt/Kassius match was fun to watch seing as my one of my best friends was really given a chance to shine.
Joe Legend/Chris Steele was good, I wouldnt be surprised to see Steele working for a big company in the states in a couple of years time and I recently read that Legend was being looked at by NWA TNA. Steele looks like a mini benoit :o
Andy Hogg/Jem 'MTX' Brown was so funny it has to be included in this list.
Even Fliesch/Williams/Daniels match London Calling was a good watch.
Lots more, those just off the top of my head. Seen some good stuff.

Rob Van Dam vs X-Pac- WWE Insurexion Tour NEC
1st time 2 c RVD wrestle in the flesh. Average match, but cool to see him hit all the spots & c the 5 star frog splah from a few feet away.
JP Munro vs Kurrupt - Hammerlock october tour Herne Bay
amazing match. The both took out the front row with planchas and topes. Went a good 15 minutes. Crowd loved it.
Jake The Snake Roberts & Mike Mendoza vs Jonny Moss & Stephen Wolofski - Hammerlock October tour Bedworth.
Realy good match. VERY stiff chops by mossy on jake. great psycology & drama.
Majik vs Paul Vault for the NWA-UK Jr Heavyweight _title_ - Hammerlock March tour Bedworth
Memorable match. Majik won the vacant NWA-UK Jr Heavyweight belt after a one night tournament feat. Jester & some other dude i cant remember (might have been Kassius, Maj?)
Royal Rumble - Hammerlock March tour Bedworth
Feat. the debuts of several MPW stars including Jekkel, Chris Charizma, Storm & .....damn, cant remember!
JP Munro vs Danny Williams - Hammerlock October tour Margate
Great high flying spot fest.
Corey Vandal vs Majik - Hammerlock October tour Herne Bay
My NWA-UK Hammerlock debut! I had what i consider the best match of my career so far. Good Psycology (but i kinda ruined it by having my legs worked on, then going up 4 a top-rope splash!).
Kurrupt & Peackeeper vs Fergal Devitt & Paul Tracy - Hammerlock October Tour Margate
The NEW-UK Hammerlock debut of MPW star, Peacekeeper. Good Match. Someone who saw the show i spoke 2 in a chat room called it MOTN.
Jekkel vs Coyote - MPW Holbrooks Show Coventry
The 1st match was a good high flying lucha spotfest. Coyote broke his foot on a dive to the outside, but still manage to face Jekkel in a rematch.
Any Technico match - Hammerlock October tour
The guy rules!!!!!!! TECHNICO!!(yes majik, im doing the pose  )
Total Carnage vs Jekkel & Jack Union NO DQ match - MPW House Show 3 Coventry
Amazing match. Included a chair shot by Wolf Kallous on Jack Union as he dived over the top rope, A spear through the rope from the outside, and a STIFF Boar Bomb (baldo bomb) on Jekkel by Wild Boar, onto a STEEL CHAIR!!! Shame the damn camera broke.
damn, thats 11.
Stand Out British Wrestling Moment:
Chris Charizma's Promo - MPW Holbrooks Show Coventry
LMAO!!!!!!! Such Profanity, so many children!the sound from the locker room (well, under a tree behind a tent) when he told a small child that he knew for a fact the his mom liked it D*gg* St*l*!
EDIT: Ive just remember a couple more.
Puppet vs Teo - WWA November Tour NEC
ive got two words for ya: MIDGET WRESTLING!!!!!!!! Some hilarious spots, including a bottom rope 6-1-9.
Sabu vs Perry Saturn vs Simon Diamond No DQ - WWA November tour NEC
Tipical Sabu spotfest, complete with tables & chairs . It was cool to be just a few rows back from Sabu when he hit the Triple Jump Moonsault.
