Re: Marty Jones 6 Years, 1 Month ago
Yes Chris, every one of them great wrestlers and entertainers.

I can also remember during the late 80's during Marty's 'rough and rugged' period when he took a young wrestler under his wing and acted as his mentor for many months - James Mason. I was never sure whether this was a storyline being followed through at the time or whether Marty was genuinely pushing the young man's ring career long !
Whatever, they were always appearing together on the same bill ( at least at Norwich) and shared the tag-team rope in some memorable encounters with the top teams of the time.
Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to whether Marty was instrumental in raising a young James' profile.

Unfortunately i was only born in the 80's and im not actually sure of when my dads carreer began. As a young boy he did ameteur wrestling and later went on to have a stable near home where he would train etc. I will ask my dad as to when he first began wrestling . I think it was the late 70's tho.

Unfortunately for me I travelled to Belle Vue from Sussex to see that tag match in August 1980 but Quinn had jumped ships to Dixons by then and was replaced by King Kong Kirk.

Re: Marty Jones 6 Years ago
Just stumbled across this forum, nice to see discussions about the TRUE legends.

Marty definitely started in the mid-70s, I distinctly remember him one Tuesday night (remember when wrestling was on then as well as Saturdays?) against Rocco, who got well and truly busted open. I also remember Kent Walton (is he still around?) telling the story of how a 9 year old Marty got to the final of an amateur tournament only to lose to a 16 year old.

Marty Jones was a true Great who, I believe never quite got the recognition he deserved. I too had that programme but also remember him partnering Haystacks about a year earlier.
I once saw him tag a guy called Roy Jones - any relation i wonder?

i had the pleasure of meeting Marty on a number of occasions - a true gent.

As I am in the pub game it is interesting to see all these guys taking up pubs in their retirement - its no easy game. For info Neil sands currently is a tenant of ours down south
