What a wonderfull two weeks we have just spent with Mark Rocco and his lovely wife Ann. As always Mark was the perfect host and did everything in his power to make sure our stay was one to remember. As Mark has now moved into his new house he gave us the use of his other house which is situated near the main tourist area of Las Americas and also has its own swimming pool. His new house is even more beautifull even though it is situated on the side of a mountain 700 meters above sea level. The road to get up to the house is a nightmare, with bends and curves that frighten the life out of you. The last mile is on his own private road which is even worse than the public one and on the last night my poor hire car, fully loaded with my wife and myself and Mark and Ann just couldnt make it up to the top which meant everyone had to get out and push ( not me of course-I was driving ) having said that, once you get up there the views are breathtaking, and the house is a dream. Having seen how Marks career as a wrestler came to such a sad and sudden end its really great to see him doing so well for himself,he really deserves it,may it long continue ! As usual we had loads to talk about, and on the first morning as we ate breakfast Ann said to my wife It must be a true sign of friendship the way they are,its over two years since they saw each other but you would think it was only yesterday That short statement actually brought a lump in my throat because its so true,Mark and I have known each other since we were toddlers and he really is my best friend. Of course we talked about the Old Days and some of the things we got up to. Like most wrestlers Mark and I occasionally exaggerated the truth a little bit,and one day in particular we were on our way to a show, just the two of us,when I suggested we should do something to pass the time, lets have a contest to see who can tell the biggest lie I said,to which Mark replied ` I don't tell lies . At that I named him the winner of the contest Theres no way I can beat that one I said, which sent Mark into a sulk and we passed the next two hours silence. We laughed again at the memory when all of a sudden Mark said to me Im doing all right now you know, but what ever I tell you knock 30% off . Is that the end of an era ? no more porkies ? I really hope not,If anyone can tell a good story its the Rollerball. Having lots of time to laze by the pool I also had time to read Steve Regels book, which I enjoyed a lot. It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth about the down points in your life, and Steve did it with great honesty, hats off to him for it. Lets hope those downsides are all in the past and that he goes on to even better things. In the last year three good friends and great wrestlers have passed away, Kevin Coneley,Rocky Moran, and the great Alfie Hayes, all great charactors who will be sadly missed. On a happier front Im pleased to see that Sweet Saraya has been found safe, I wish her and Ricky good luck and hope that they solve whatever problems they have. Secondly, I was delighted to speak to Steve Veidor a few weeks ago,he called me from the Wrestlers Reunion and it was great to talk to him again. When I first started to wrestle he was my idol and when I first met him he gave me nothing but good advice, one of the most genuine people I have ever met. Third and finaly is the news that my grandson, Ryan Taylor, has been transfered from Tranmere Rovers to Wigan Athletic in the Premiership. It looked at one point as though he was going to Everton, which Im sure would have cheered Robby Brookside up,he would have been at me for free tickets, but at the last minute Wigan signed him. Since then he has also been called up for England U21s,so it looks like his future is on the up,I just hope he remembers his poor ex-wrestler Grandad !!!!!! Although I am an ex-wrestler I have to dig my boots out this week. On Saturday I have a Legends Match against another old friend, Johnny South. I just hope he remembers Im older than he is and doesnt blow me up too much. Actually, Im really looking forward to it and although I don't intend doing to many top rope moves I think I can still put a match together. I hope so because Im planning another match later in the year against Terry Funk ! Anyway that's it for now, Yours in Sport Tony St.Clair p.s. I asked Mark if he was ever a part of the Riot Squad and the answer is no !
